In 1520, the Emir of the Sultanate of Adalah, succeeding the Sultanate of Ifat, moved the capital to Harar. Even today, the city is known for its outstanding craftsmanship; woven fabrics, wickerwork, silverware and hand-bound books are the trademarks. There are several museums, including the Rimbaud House, where the French poet has lived several times for over the years. The hyena man, who feeds mouth-to-mouth hyenas on the outskirts of the city, is also famous. This has been a tradition since about the year 1900.
